Headshots

Last night started out at 5 with me getting a phone call from Simon, who invited me over for another Shabbat at his parents house. This 'Day of Rest', which is a big part of the Jewish religion, always includes a big dinner on Friday night. I've already visited each Simon's and Jonathan's houses once for this occasion. The past times it was only the families, but yesterday it was kinda like the shawarma dinner a couple of days back – lots of friends and a very warm atmosphere. After the dinner Simon, Sebastian, Malte, Emil and I went back to our place to have a couple of drinks and as it would turn out, a very heated debate about politics. Malte and I also spoke French for almost an hour, as he wanted to practice his language skills. And hey, what better partner than me – the mastermind of Francais. God, it must've sounded horrible...

Anyways, at 1 we all split up. The boys went to a party at their philosophy faculty and I went to a big 'Sports Party' at my school. Turned out to be not that big after all. Lots of people but too much space, so it always seemed a bit empty. But it still was fun. I guess alcohol makes every party fun. After about two hours Chloé, Gabo, a friend of his and I decided to go to a 'Polka Party' at Dakota in the city, where we met up with Pauli and a couple of others. And that party certainly made up for everything. Good music – even thoug it wasn't really polka, more like ska and latino stuff with strong beats – and a good crowd. So we danced til we dropped, in my case somewhere around 6. The night ended with Sebastian and me – he sleeps on our couch almost every weekend and we came home coincidentally at the same time – having a shawarma 'breakfast' before going to bed.

But the thing that struck me the most that night at Dakota, was that everybody seemed to be horny as hell. I'm used to that from Erasmus parties, but definitely not from the coolish Danes. Seriously there'd be about ten girls making out with random guys and when I went to take a piss and came back after five minutes, they'd be frenching ten completely different guys and vice versa. Chloé for her part had five 'encounters' (incl. Gabo AND his friend), at least the ones I counted...

Election Campaign

Why don't all of our politicians look like models? And why aren't we as creative in making them look ridiculous? P.S. I think I'm in love with Mrs. Auken.

Illustration Workshop (III)

On an article about native tribes generally being perceived as 'primitive'.

Juleøl

Means "Christmas Beer" in English. It's a tradition by all danish breweries to release a specially brewed beer for the Christmas time on the first Friday of November at 20:59. After that, basically the whole infrastructure of danish society breaks down. Just to let you know, what the culture here is based on...

More Shrigley

As I've just found out how to embed vids, I'll just put on Blur's 'Good Song' with illustrations by David Shrigley instead of just linking to it. Neat, huh? This vid was also shown at the exhibition by the way.

The Real Underground Shit

The story of last Friday. This time I'm not gonna write that much but instead let the pictures do the talking. Just this:

It started out with the Friday Bar at my school (where everyone started drinking at 2-fucking-30!!) , where the group 'D204' presented their contribution to the Crosskick Project, then went on to some Kebab Store Soccer, a short pit stop for drinks at my place and finally ended at the long-awaited Monolake gig.

Monolake has been making music as part of the IDM movement for over 10 years and even invented his own instrument, the Monodeck, which is the only thing he played at the event. The last link and the song Linear show what you have to imagine the concert sounded like, as the stuff for download on his website isn't really representing his current style, I think. Another good reference is his MySpace site.

The location was an old ship called M/S Halfmachine which travels around the Copenhagen harbor and is currently docked way off in the outskirts of the city in some industrial area. Kinda creepy. The place itself was also veeeery underground – rusty, dirty, dark with the obligatory art installations and intellectual music enthusiasts. Just about as close to the cliché you see in movies as it can get, but see for yourself...

David Shrigley In Malmö

This Sunday Simon, Julie, Astrid and I went on a day trip to Sweden to see the work of David Shrigley at the Malmö Konsthall. Some of you might know him from the 'Good Song' video he did for Blur. While you're at it, have a look at the hilariously strange Who I Am And What I Want.

But anyways, a very very refreshing exhibition. That guy just doesn't seem to give a shit at all and does whatever the hell he wants to, without even trying to explain it a single bit. Sometimes ironic, sometimes harsh and sometimes just plain nuts. For me one of the few bright spots in contemporary art right now. Still, I don't wanna know what's going on in that guys head...

First Night at Vega

This Saturday I was actually planning to have a layed back evening, get rid of my headache from Friday night (report will follow) and maybe watch a movie or something. But I had no chance to ever get to it as at 8 o'clock our home was invaded by ten party-hungry friends of Simon. Andrea, who just dropped by to pick up her laptop and had also planned to stay sober that night, and I suddenly found ourselves amongst the people, drinking wine and beer like it was our sole purpose to existence.

At about 12:30 we were helplessly dragged to Vega, probably Copenhagen's most popular nightclub right now, but the only half-full dance floor resulted in us first being a bit hesitant about getting down and dirty. A Trak (Kanye West) had some trouble getting the crowd going but when he was finally joined by DJ Mehdi (Ed Banger), then started what should turn out to be one of the finest DJ sets I have ever danced my ass off to. For those of you who don't know, these guys just might be two of the hottest Electro/New Rave DJs out there at the moment. And when Mehdi put on the Boyz Noize remix of Feist's "My Moon My Man" it was just all over anyways...

Sorry I have no pictures to show, except for maybe some crappy cell phone shots, but I was just too busy jumping and sweating ;) Oh, and check out Mehdi's music in this very nice vid:

Sebastian worked on these for an hour like an autistic child, we were almost worried. But isn't that smile worth more than a million bucks?
