A Night In Pictures

I cam home from school at 11 and the boys were already hammered from celebrating Hakoah's season final. But I'll let the photos do the talking. Just three statements on last night: Smirnoff Ice is considered 'faggot beer' among my soccer playing freinds. People pissing in the bathtub as the toilet was clogged up. The DJs at Vega this night were The Glass and Tomboy.

Coco Rosie

Yesterday evening I went to see Coco Rosie in the big concert hall at Vega. We were a pretty big group this time around: Guilom, Dora, Manu, Gabo, Andrea, Leo, Johannes, Schwan, Dot plus a couple of others from school and Rebecca and Astrid from the apartment gang. Was quite nice to see a concert with so many people that you know.

We arrived a bit late, so we missed the opening act and got there just in time to see the two sisters from NY. The show itself was nice and ok, but to be honest I expected a bit more from an event I paid 250 DKK for (about 32€) and which I had awaited with great anticipation for over a month. And I wasn't alone – all the guys except Leo were disappointed. On the other hand all the girls except Andrea really enjoyed it. So I guess it must be a girls thing. Don't get me wrong, I must admit that I'm not a great fan and I think they actually sounded better live than on their album. But still, with all the hype that's been made and the 5-star reviews that they've been getting I had hoped for a little more than a relatively monotonous set – they didn't even play "Rainbowarrior" – and cheap visual effects in the background. At least for that kind of money. The best moment of the evening was the 3 minute solo of Tez, a french beatboxer that tours with the two girls and replaces the drum set in all their songs.

As the stupid security didn't let me take my camera inside ("You should've called Coco Rosie first and asked them if you could take pictures..." WTF?!) I could only take some pictures with Dot's cam, which didn't turn out that nice though. But therefore I was able to capture pieces of the concert on video, which was kinda cool. To see two more movies go to Daily Motion as I've uploaded them there and search for Coco Rosie, Vega.

Jakobínarína

Six angry upstart kids with lots of self-confidence ("All other bands we've heard so far are crap.") from Iceland called Jakobínarína tried to rock the beautiful Jazzhouse yesterday night. Problem was, due to bad tour management/advertising almost no one took notice of it. So these very talented 18 to 21-year olds (although the bass player looked like 14) playing an energetic indie-punk – and who are used to open for the Kaizer Chiefs – had to perform in front of a mini crowd of about 50 or 60 people. You could literally see the disappointment in their faces. They played down their setlist with the lead singer being the only one really trying to entertain by dancing freakishly the whole time. And after about 45 minutes the whole thing was over. It ended with the singer dropping the mic and leaving the stage extremely pissed off through the crowd and the rest of the band disappearing wordlessly backstage. Too bad. Because even though these final flashes of rock star allure and arrogance were quite unnecessary, they would still have deserved a bigger audience.

The guy I went to see them with, Kári – from my class and also from Icealnd, and a very cool guy at that – and I finished the night off with a long and pleasant talk about street art and the likes at the Bo Bi Bar, supposedly one of the oldest bars in Copenhagen.

Headshots

Last night started out at 5 with me getting a phone call from Simon, who invited me over for another Shabbat at his parents house. This 'Day of Rest', which is a big part of the Jewish religion, always includes a big dinner on Friday night. I've already visited each Simon's and Jonathan's houses once for this occasion. The past times it was only the families, but yesterday it was kinda like the shawarma dinner a couple of days back – lots of friends and a very warm atmosphere. After the dinner Simon, Sebastian, Malte, Emil and I went back to our place to have a couple of drinks and as it would turn out, a very heated debate about politics. Malte and I also spoke French for almost an hour, as he wanted to practice his language skills. And hey, what better partner than me – the mastermind of Francais. God, it must've sounded horrible...

Anyways, at 1 we all split up. The boys went to a party at their philosophy faculty and I went to a big 'Sports Party' at my school. Turned out to be not that big after all. Lots of people but too much space, so it always seemed a bit empty. But it still was fun. I guess alcohol makes every party fun. After about two hours Chloé, Gabo, a friend of his and I decided to go to a 'Polka Party' at Dakota in the city, where we met up with Pauli and a couple of others. And that party certainly made up for everything. Good music – even thoug it wasn't really polka, more like ska and latino stuff with strong beats – and a good crowd. So we danced til we dropped, in my case somewhere around 6. The night ended with Sebastian and me – he sleeps on our couch almost every weekend and we came home coincidentally at the same time – having a shawarma 'breakfast' before going to bed.

But the thing that struck me the most that night at Dakota, was that everybody seemed to be horny as hell. I'm used to that from Erasmus parties, but definitely not from the coolish Danes. Seriously there'd be about ten girls making out with random guys and when I went to take a piss and came back after five minutes, they'd be frenching ten completely different guys and vice versa. Chloé for her part had five 'encounters' (incl. Gabo AND his friend), at least the ones I counted...

The Real Underground Shit

The story of last Friday. This time I'm not gonna write that much but instead let the pictures do the talking. Just this:

It started out with the Friday Bar at my school (where everyone started drinking at 2-fucking-30!!) , where the group 'D204' presented their contribution to the Crosskick Project, then went on to some Kebab Store Soccer, a short pit stop for drinks at my place and finally ended at the long-awaited Monolake gig.

Monolake has been making music as part of the IDM movement for over 10 years and even invented his own instrument, the Monodeck, which is the only thing he played at the event. The last link and the song Linear show what you have to imagine the concert sounded like, as the stuff for download on his website isn't really representing his current style, I think. Another good reference is his MySpace site.

The location was an old ship called M/S Halfmachine which travels around the Copenhagen harbor and is currently docked way off in the outskirts of the city in some industrial area. Kinda creepy. The place itself was also veeeery underground – rusty, dirty, dark with the obligatory art installations and intellectual music enthusiasts. Just about as close to the cliché you see in movies as it can get, but see for yourself...

First Night at Vega

This Saturday I was actually planning to have a layed back evening, get rid of my headache from Friday night (report will follow) and maybe watch a movie or something. But I had no chance to ever get to it as at 8 o'clock our home was invaded by ten party-hungry friends of Simon. Andrea, who just dropped by to pick up her laptop and had also planned to stay sober that night, and I suddenly found ourselves amongst the people, drinking wine and beer like it was our sole purpose to existence.

At about 12:30 we were helplessly dragged to Vega, probably Copenhagen's most popular nightclub right now, but the only half-full dance floor resulted in us first being a bit hesitant about getting down and dirty. A Trak (Kanye West) had some trouble getting the crowd going but when he was finally joined by DJ Mehdi (Ed Banger), then started what should turn out to be one of the finest DJ sets I have ever danced my ass off to. For those of you who don't know, these guys just might be two of the hottest Electro/New Rave DJs out there at the moment. And when Mehdi put on the Boyz Noize remix of Feist's "My Moon My Man" it was just all over anyways...

Sorry I have no pictures to show, except for maybe some crappy cell phone shots, but I was just too busy jumping and sweating ;) Oh, and check out Mehdi's music in this very nice vid:

Drinks With The Fernandes'

This Friday Pete invited 15 of his closest buddies here in Copenhagen to have drinks at the pretty posh The Lounge with him – and his parents. First I was a bit skeptic as I had no idea what an evening like this would look like. But then again, with Pete being one of the most open and good-natured people I've ever met in my life, his parents just couldn't be any bad. And that's exactly how it was, they are very warm and friendly folks who enjoyed themselves just as much as we did and didn't seem to feel a single bit awkward by going out with so many young brats.
And hey, they payed for three rounds of cocktails for everyone! How nice is that!? Thing was, we had to chug them down within 40 minutes, then the bars Happy Hour ended. Tipsiness guaranteed.

Oh and by the way, since this night I have a new favorite drink. 'Shark Attack' – vodka, strawberry syrup, Sprite and fresh strawberries. Damn sweet but sooo good.

Porn And Propaganda

This Friday was also one of the opening events for the local documentary film festival CPH:DOX. The festival doesn't start until November 9th but there are already some preliminary warm-ups all over the city right now. This one was called Bodily Functions and took place in the very cozy and friendly 'Byens Lys' in Christiania.

The location was sort of a mixture of bar, lounge and cinema all combined in one room with the whole floor being covered with silica sand, which felt a bit weird to walk on indoors. The evening
would be filled with three short films: an instructional movie from the 40s for nurses showing how to wash patients incapable of doing it themselves, two pre-pornos from the 60s shown simultaneously on top of each other (like two transparent layers), and a documentary also from the 60s made by the U.S. Army depicting the worklife of doctors/medics in the Vietnam War.

The first movie was just plain weird and I felt like one of these freaky film nerds who stare at a blank screen for three hours and are then able to hold nightlong monologues about the deeper meaning of it. The second one was, of course, a bit more entertaining and unintentionally funny. Lots of flower power, strange dancing and the conclusion that 40 years ago it apparently took a lot less to get people aroused than it does today. The third and last film was extremely gross and hard to watch. Soldiers getting their legs sawed off, getting the burned skin stripped off their muscles and getting bullets pulled out of their eye sockets. Not a pretty sight – several people left the building. What made it so bad was maybe not the bloody pictures itself, but the knowledge that this was the real thing and not just cheap special effects.

I should add, that the original sound of the movies was turned off and replaced by atmospheric lo-fi sound (1st) and rock music (2nd) created by a live band positioned to side of the screen. The third film was accompanied by three readers simultaneously reciting short texts, also live. All in all very artsy but interesting and entertaining nonetheless. Plus, the location and atmosphere we're just so relaxed and friendly one couldn't help but feel comfortable. Afterwards we went to a Halloween party at the Copenhagen Film School but didn't stay very long. The music was crap, the crowd not too wild and we were all still a bit shaky from the last movie. But the girls, oh my god, the girls. I guess I will never get over that as long as I'm here.

kino4 kino5 kino3 kino2 kino1

Please excuse the quality of the pics, it was a bit too dark. And sorry there are no shots of movie number 2, I know you'd like to see some – I misplaced my camera and couldn't find it in the dark. No shit!
