Winter Wonderland

As you could already see in the last post, we're having quite a bit of snow in Oslo at the moment. Last Sunday it poured down 40cm of the stuff. About two thirds already melted away again until yesterday, but since it's been snowing all day today everything is getting covered with the white powdery goodness yet again.

Two things that are really cool about snow in Os-low (droppin' some dope rhymes along the way as always...):

A) During the whole winter so far, I always felt that it was missing. I mean after all, I am in the middle of Scandinavia, and to be honest, I was expecting snow from December all the way to March. But with all the gray skies and rain that we've had here so far, I could've just as well been in any German city. I guess, I just needed the snow to confirm the cliché image of Norway in my head :)

B) It's so good to see snow over a longer period of time! Especially in a big city. I think the last time I had more than 15cm of snow for a week in my hometown is at least five or six years past. And I've really missed it! Deep snow just makes everything nice. It cleans up dirty spots, it makes the nights and days seem lighter, it muffles all sounds. Plus, it's just so grotesque how a big amount of snow in a short time can still slow down an entire city and let it sink into a sort of mellowed down chaos. People don't use their cars anymore (here they just didn't bother to dig them out), sidewalks don't get cleared, people barely go out of their houses at all. I love it! When you go out at night, everything is so quiet and weird looking – it feels like I'm walking through some bizarre ghost town and have the whole place to myself. And there's just nothing like wading through knee deep, crunchy snow where there used to be big inner city streets...
